Working from home has a lot of advantages. Personally, I like to work from home because I get to spend more time with my daughther, I get to eat healthier, avoid transportation and get to manage my own time.
Coincidentally, In these times working from home has become normal for a lot of people as well. Throughout the years I have gathered my tips to make work from home more sustainable. Here are my Eco-friendly work from home tips:
1. Dress comfortably, but avoid wearing pj’s. Getting dressed for work sets the tone for your day. Has a positive influence and can help you to get into a working mood.
2. Set the heater one or two degrees lower than what you normally set it. Have an extra sweater close to your desk to wear in case you get cold. Turning your thermostat down by just a couple of degrees can lower carbon emissions and cut your monthly gas and electric bills.
3. Make the most of natural light. Set your work desk in an area of your home that has lots of natural light. This will reduce the need to use lamps while you’re working during the day. Being exposed to natural light is necessary for your well-being.
4. Unplug the devices that you are not using. Electronic devices still use energy when they are plugged in but aren’t being used. Leaving devices plugged into the wall is a huge waste of energy and can increase your electricity bills. It also creates harmful emissions and puts unnecessary stress on the environment.
5. Keep a water bottle by your desk throughout the day. To make sure you stay hydrated.
6. Place plants in your workspace, plants make you happy! In addition, it improves the quality of the air in the room.
7. If possible, plan phone calls while going for a walk. The act of walking leads to increases in creative thinking. Walking meetings lead to more honest exchanges with employees and are more productive than traditional sit-down meetings.
8. Avoid using the camera on phone calls. In Zoom this saves you 90% on data. Thus, less CO2 emissions.
9. Take breaks. If you work for a company, know the policy on break times and take them. If you are self-employed find a routine and include breaks on it. For computer-based work and other sedentary work, it’s important to stand up and move to get your blood circulating. It also helps to move your eyes off screen regularly, even if it’s a micro-break of 10-20 seconds.

I work from home and love it! the only tip I would add is time blocking your day because it does get hard to “leave work” since you aren’t physically leaving. Making sure you have set time each day for work and other activities will help.
